Medical practices and healthcare organizations across the country are facing immense pressure as fallout from the recent Change Healthcare cyberattack continues to impact prior authorizations, bill pay, patient prescriptions, and more.
To provide relief to physician groups, hospitals, and other healthcare facilities unable to submit Medicare claims (and who have also exhausted all other potential areas of funding), the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently announced the Change Healthcare/Optum Payment Disruption (CHOPD) program.
CHOPD is designed to provide accelerated payments to Part A providers and advance payments to Part B suppliers experiencing potentially significant cash-flow problems as a result of the disruption to Change Healthcare’s data network.1
Medicare will advance up to 30 days of eligible payment based on the total claims paid to the provider or supplier between August 1, 2023 and October 31, 2023, divided by 3. Providers/Suppliers are to repay these accelerated/advanced funds within 90 days of receiving payment, with interest beginning to accrue 30 days after that.
